Welcome to Widening the Lens!

Widening the Lens was born from the belief that powerful stories deserve to inspire, not get buried by big-budget blockbusters or formulaic algorithms.

While blockbusters like Jurassic Park and Marvel movies deliver escapism, shouldn’t we also cherish smaller, more personal works of art?

Alongside mega-budget films, gems like Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes and Fast Color offer genre-bending narratives and culturally rich perspectives.

One of my earliest memories of powerful, authentic independent cinema is Patricia Cardoso’s 2002 film Real Women Have Curves. The story of a plus-size Mexican woman navigating self-acceptance and identity illuminated universal themes that surpass cultural borders.

In my small Kentucky town’s lone theater, I, a Black girl, found myself deeply resonating with this award-winning Mexican American film, proving how stories can connect us across cultures.

To celebrate captivating stories like these and build a community of cinephiles who believe great art goes beyond budget, I created Widening the Lens.
